It would also provide coverage over certain financial issues.
In case you put some money in non refundable prepayments and were not able to use that money, travel insurance would become liable for refunding that money. Most of the travel insurance policies also cover some other types of losses which may be incurred while traveling.
You can also get specialized travel insurance for special cases. Some examples of such cases include any pre-existing medical conditions. Commonly covered conditions include diabetes and asthma. In case you would be involved in high risk physical activity, special insurance is needed. For example, while you plan to get abroad to participate in sports with risk factors say skiing, snorkeling and scuba diving. When some people have to travel to high risk locations, for example journalists traveling to war torn countries, they must have proper travel insurance.
Be advised that some of the pre existing medical conditions may not be covered in travel insurance. In some plans, war or damage caused by terrorist attacks is not covered unless explicitly asked for. Pregnancy related expenses are not commonly covered in travel insurance either.
